In his long career as a writer, Murray Seeger has been heavily engaged in two overlapping topics, communism and economics. He was working as a reporter in Cleveland when he was awarded a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism at Harvard University and began his study of communism and the Soviet Union.
Seeger's career writing economics began at the New York Times where he covered labor. In Washington, he wrote about economic policy for Newsweek and then the Los Angeles Times. He covered the Soviet Union and East Europe for the LAT before moving to Brussels to open a bureau covering economics across the continent.
Back in Washington, Seeger was named Director of Information for the AFL-CIO. He returned to newspapering as senior consultant to the Straits Times of Singapore and was then appointed assistant director, External Affairs Department, of the International Monetary Fund. Part of his job was to help journalists from the communist world learn about the world economy.
Seeger has taught journalism at the University of Michigan, University of Maryland and the George Washington and American Universities in Washington, D.C. He was installed in the University of Iowa Journalism Hall of Fame and named a distinguished alumnus of that university. He is a member of the Committee of Concerned Journalists and the Authors Guild. He recently published Discovering Russia: 200 Years of American Journalism.
